Amnesty International, on Tuesday, called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to investigate the horrific killing of Abdurraheem Mustapha Abubakar, who was reportedly killed on Friday, while on his way to attend a postgraduate studies lecture at the Nigerian Defence Academy.

According to Amnesty International, Mr Abubakar was killed near Garkuwa Hospital junction on Sultan Road, Kaduna, by a ‘police’ van which knocked down the motorcycle he was riding.

The human rights organisation demanded that the investigation into Mr Abubakar’s death should be conducted by an independent body, other than the police, in a bid to ensure fairness and maintain public confidence in the process.

Amnesty International said, “This is not the time for denials and narratives. The authorities must also investigate his family’s allegation that ‘the police (are) attempting to cover up the incident’.”

Decrying the disregard for the sanctity of life in Nigeria, the country director of Amnesty International, Isa Sanusi, urged the Nigerian authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident in accordance with international standards.

“The killing of Abdurraheem again shows increasing utter disregard for the sanctity of life. The Nigerian authorities must immediately prioritise instituting an investigation that will earn the trust and confidence of his family, the public, and meet international standards,” Mr Sanusi said.
