BRUSSELS
Belgium’s military intelligence service, ADIV, has begun investigations into the helicopter firm NHV over concerns about national security following a takeover announcement by the China-linked company, the Belga news agency reported Monday.
Last year, NHV announced it would be taken over by Irish firm GD Helicopter Finance, which is ultimately owned by China’s GDAT.
Officials told VRT NWS that the potential acquisition raised alarm within the Defense Ministry over fears that China could gain access to sensitive infrastructure and military systems.
Belgium’s recent order of 20 Airbus H145M helicopters for the army and police has particularly raised concerns that, should the takeover proceed, a Chinese-linked firm could be involved in maintenance through NHV’s subcontracting bid.
Officials warned that if the deal is completed, NHV may lose the chance to work on military contracts.
