WASHINGTON D.C.: In a sign of the challenges ahead for his 2024 re-election bid, a new Reuters/Ipsos poll showed that this month, U.S. President Joe Biden’s popularity was near the lowest level of his presidency.
The three-day poll showed 40 percent of respondents approved of Biden’s performance as president, a marginal rise from 39 percent in November.
Biden is widely expected to face former President Donald Trump, the frontrunner for the Republican nomination, in a November 2024 rematch.
Other recent polls indicate a potentially close race between the two candidates.
The poll also showed that the economy, crime, and immigration were considered the main issues facing the country, all of which Trump and other Republicans have claimed were Biden’s weaknesses.
The economy was rated the top issue by 19 percent of poll respondents, while 11 percent said it was immigration and 10 percent said crime.
Since August 2021, Biden’s public approval rating has held below 50 percent, and this month’s rating remained close to the lowest level of his presidency at 36 percent in mid-2022.
The poll, which closed on December 3, collected online responses from 1,017 adults using a nationally representative sample.
