LAGOS, Nigeria

Boko Haram terrorists attacked a military base in the Marte Local Government Area of Borno State, in northeastern Nigeria, killing several soldiers.

Military sources told Anadolu that the attack occurred at the Forward Operating Base of the 153rd Task Force Battalion at around 3 am (0300GMT) Monday.

Senior military personnel said more than 10 soldiers were killed in the assault.

“The terrorists took over Marte in the early hours of the day. Over 10 soldiers were killed and hundreds of personnel deserted. They (terrorists) burnt down armored tanks and made away with arms and ammunition,” a source said.

Nigerian military officials have yet to release an official statement on the incident. Onyechi Anele, a spokesperson for the Nigerian Army, said investigations were still ongoing at the time of this report.

This marks the second attack on a military base in Borno, the epicenter of Boko Haram, in two weeks.

Boko Haram, which has been active in Nigeria since the early 2000s, has been responsible for mass terrorist attacks since 2009, claiming tens of thousands of lives.
