LONDON, England: The UK’s Telegraph newspaper has reported that Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has proposed that Britain send modern weaponry to Moldova to protect it from a possible Russian invasion.
Although the invasion of Ukraine had failed to achieve quick success, Russian President Vladimir Putin remains determined to create a “greater Russia,” she told The Telegraph.
Russia has called the invasion, which began on 24th February, a “special military operation” aimed at disarming Ukraine and eliminating anti-Russian nationalists.
However, Ukraine and its allies dismissed Russia’s claims as a pretext for war.
As Moldova, which borders Ukraine to the southwest, is not a member of the NATO alliance, Truss said talks were taking place to ensure it could deter a Russian attack.
“I would want to see Moldova equipped to NATO standards. This is a discussion we are having with our allies,” Truss told The Telegraph.
“Putin has been absolutely clear about his ambitions to create a greater Russia. And just because his attempts to take Kyiv were not successful, does not mean he’s abandoned those ambitions,” she added.
NATO member countries could provide Moldova with modern weaponry and training to replace its Soviet-era equipment, if Truss’s plans are accepted.
