KIGALI, Rwanda

Cameroon will hold presidential elections Oct. 12, according to a decree signed Friday by President Paul Biya.

Biya, 92, came to power more than four decades ago in 1982. He is yet to announce whether he will seek another term after constitutional reforms in 2008 scrapped presidential term limits.

In the 2018 elections, Biya won with 71.28% of the vote, according to official results.

With the date set, political parties are already mobilizing.

Several candidates have already declared their candidacies, including former Communication Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who resigned last month.

Tchiroma told voters that the Biya administration broke public trust and a “country cannot exist in the service of one man.”
