DHAKA, Bangladesh – Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen has urged Canada to provide financial assistance to the Gambia for the Rohingya genocide case against Myanmar in the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
According to a Foreign Ministry press release on Tuesday, the minister commented during a virtual meeting with Canadian International Development Minister Harjit Sajjan on Monday to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the two countries’ diplomatic ties.
During the discussion, Momen encouraged Canada to take the lead in resolving the Rohingya crisis, warning that their prolonged stay might pose a significant security risk and lead to regional instability owing to the growth of extremism and terrorism in the Rohingya refugees camps in Bangladesh.
The foreign minister commended Canada for its constant political and humanitarian assistance to the displaced and persecuted Rohingyas and the ongoing genocide case before the International Court of Justice.
The Canadian minister praised Bangladesh for hosting over one million displaced Rohingyas and agreed that the ultimate solution must be safe repatriation.
He stated that solid international efforts for repatriation should continue and that Canada will continue to provide political and humanitarian support.
