China will provide a financial assistance of 100 million Yuan ($15.7 million) to Eritrea, said the information minister of the Horn of Africa country.

Yemane Meskel’s remarks came as Chinese Foreign minister Wang Yi, who is on a two-day official visit to Eritrea, met with his Eritrean counterpart Osman Saleh and President Isaias Afwerki to discuss bilateral relations and strategic partnership.

“Both sides are encouraged by the confirmation of further consolidation and development of the Strategic Partnership by the two Heads of State,” the statement said.

The two countries also agreed to actively conduct practical cooperation, under the framework of the Strategic Partnership and Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, in various sectors of mutual interest.

“The Chinese side stands against any unilateral sanctions on Eritrea. The Eritrean side reaffirms adherence to the one-China principle,” it added.

Last year, the US imposed sanctions on Eritrea over the conflict in neighboring Ethiopia.

Accompanied by a delegation, Wang arrived in Eritrea’s capital Asmara on Tuesday evening as part of his eastern Africa tour.
