Colombian President Gustavo Petro and French President Emmanuel Macron discussed the situation in the Middle East in a phone call Tuesday, Colombia’s presidency said in a statement.
The conversation between the two leaders lasted more than 30 minutes, according to the statement.
Macron thanked Petro for his peace efforts and agreed on the importance of a ceasefire and dialogue to end the conflict, the statement added.
“Macron will help us expand the number of countries seeking an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East,” Petro said on the US social media company X’s platform.
The call came as Israel and the US have continued a joint offensive on Iran since Feb. 28, killing around 1,300 people so far, including then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, causing casualties and damage to infrastructure while disrupting global markets and aviation.
