  • The news surprisingly was not greeted so well in China where the Shanghai Composite and Hang Seng both fell.
  • The Nikkei 225 added to recent gains with a whopping 434.19 points or 1.60%, taking the index to 27,490.13.
  • In Australia, the All Ordinaries advanced 99.10 points or 1.44 percent to 6,980.50.

SYDNEY, NSW, Australia – Investors in parts of Asia on Thursday gave a thumbs-up to Georgian voters who delivered the U.S. Senate to the Democrats, after two narrowly won faceoffs.

With a Democrat-controlled Congress, it will be far easier for President-elect Joe Biden to push through his agenda.

“ASEAN markets are likewise expected to relish this positivity with the anticipated unleashing of further fiscal injections by the incoming U.S. administration enthusing assets sensitive to economic growth,” Jingyi Pan, a Singapore-based market strategist with financial services firm IG told Reuters Thomson Thursday.

The news surprisingly was not greeted so well in Hong Kong where the Hang Seng both fell.

In Tokyo however, there was euphoria. Trading at a three-decade high, the Nikkei 225 added to recent gains with a whopping 434.19 points or 1.60%, taking the index to 27,490.13.

In Australia, the All Ordinaries advanced 99.10 points or 1.44 percent to 6,980.50.

China’s Shanghai Composite advanced 25.33 points or 0.71 percent to 3,576.20.

The Hang Seng in Hong Kong lost 143.78 points or 0.52 percent to 27,548.52.

The U.S. dollar was largely unchanged during the Asian trading session. The euro was a fraction lighter at 1.2321. The British pound inched down to 1.3591. The Japanese yen lost a few points to 103.20. The Swiss franc was little changed at 0.8788.

The Canadian dollar was unchanged at 1.2676. The Australian dollar dipped to 0.7787. The New Zealand dollar shed a few points to last trade in Sydney Thursday at 0.7281.

Overnight on Wall Street, the Dow Jones index jumped 437.80 points or 1.44 percent to 30,829.40.

The Standard and Poor’s 500 rose 21.28 points or 0.57 percent to 3,748.14.

The Nasdaq Composite, going against the trend, declined 78.17 points or 0.61 percent to 12,740.79.
