Dauda Biu, former corps marshal, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), has advocated constitutional roles for traditional rulers to bolster security.

According to him, such roles in the security architecture will greatly enhance community policing and border security.

The former corps marshal made the appeal on the sidelines of his coronation as the pooneer “Jagaban Sabon Gari” on Sunday in Zaria.

He said the traditional rulers had local influence and knowledge, enabling them to effectively detect and address security issues.

Mr Biu stated that ward, village and district heads working under emirs had an established system that effectively monitors their respective areas.

He, therefore, opined that assigning constitutional roles to them would strengthen security and good governance.

Mr Biu said that before the local government reforms stripped them of their powers, the traditional rulers had demonstrated how they maintained security in their respective domains.

Speaking on the menace of drug abuse in some parts of the country, Mr Biu called for the strengthening of technical schools and colleges.

According to him, this will help offer emerging skills in technical education, hence boosting entrepreneurship and reducing youth unemployment.

Mr Biu urged that the state and local governments prioritise robust skills acquisition initiatives for the youth.

According to him, this would address the menace of drug abuse and criminal activities in communities.

“I would strongly recommend that the government should reconsider bringing back these technical colleges because they will greatly boost our local talents,’’ Mr Biu said.

Similarly, the former FRSC boss urged affluent Nigerians to establish cottage industries to offer more employment opportunities and curb youths’ restiveness.
