LONDON, England: As the UK opens up following a three-month coronavirus lockdown, families and friends are being reunited in outdoor spaces, and parks are filled with those enjoying warm spring days.
Under this week’s end to the lockdown, groups of up to six, or two households, can socialize in parks and gardens, and outdoor sports facilities can reopen.
On Monday when the change was announced, the British called the opening Happy Monday – the day the outdoor swimming pools again opened, along with golf courses, parks and football pitches.
Due to the rapid rollout of vaccines, coronavirus infections have fallen dramatically throughout England, allowing the country to begin to return to normal.
Also, coronavirus restrictions are easing in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
“It’s only because of months of sacrifice and effort that we can take this small step towards freedom today, and we must proceed with caution,” Prime Minister Boris Johnson said at a media briefing.
However, Johnson warned that it is “inevitable” that new infections would increase soon, as Europe struggles with a resurgence of the virus.
Still, Johnson urged the public to follow rules and be vaccinated as soon as possible.
To show that they have their priorities set, the Morley Hayes Golf Club in central England scheduled players to tee off at 12:01 a.m. for a seven-hole flood-lit charity tournament.
However, due to concerns about a resurgence of infections, the government said it will continue being cautious in lifting restrictions. For instance, plans to allow pubs to serve beer outside starting April 12 could be postponed if a new round of virus infections begins.
