TOKYO, Japan: Japan will require athletes coming from India and five other nations to undergo day-to-day testing for the Delta Covid variant for one week prior to departing for the Tokyo Olympics.

At present, every athlete from abroad is required to undergo COVID-19 testing on two occasions during the four days prior to departing for the Tokyo Olympics, which is scheduled to begin on July 23.

Tokyo postponed last year’s 2020 Olympics due to the Covid pandemic.

The Government of Japan is seeking extra testing for athletes from Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Maldives, Pakistan and Afghanistan, according to the Yomiuri Shimbun.

T. Marukawa, in charge of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympic Games, noted on June 25 that an athlete from Uganda, who received a positive test result for COVID-19, had the Delta strain of COVID-19, which raised concerns of the variant being spread during the Olympics.
