EuroCup Women, FIBA Europe Cup fixtures for coming week postponed ‘until further notice’
ANKARA
FIBA Europe on Thursday extended the postponement of games involving Israeli teams as the conflict in Gaza continues for its 13th day.
“Following consultation with the participating clubs, the Israeli Basketball Federation and the FIBA Europe security advisors, FIBA Europe has decided to prolong the postponement of all games involving Israeli teams in EuroCup Women and FIBA Europe Cup for the coming week and until further notice,” the administrative body for basketball in Europe said in a statement.
FIBA Europe said it closely cooperates with the Israeli Basketball Federation and clubs, and continues to monitor the situation.
“The dates and times of any re-rescheduled fixtures will be confirmed as soon as the situation allows,” it added.
The deadly conflict in Gaza, which is under Israeli bombardment and blockade since Oct. 7, began when Hamas initiated Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, a multi-pronged surprise attack that included a barrage of rocket launches and infiltrations into Israel by land, sea, and air. It said the incursion was in retaliation for the storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and growing violence by Israeli settlers.
The Israeli military then launched Operation Swords of Iron against Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip.
Gaza is experiencing a dire humanitarian crisis, with no electricity, while water, food, fuel, and medical supplies are running out.
