The recent flood in the Jakande Estate area in Lagos State submerged a market, schools, hospitals, religious centres and a police station.

In a statement shared on its official X handle, the National Emergency Management Agency stated that the flood also collapsed structures in the area, rendering residents homeless.

NEMA made the disclosure on Thursday, after its Lagos Territorial Office representatives of the estate, and the office of the House of Representatives member representing Eti-Osa Federal Constituency, Attah Thaddeus, carried out a joint assessment of the flood incident on Wednesday.

The agency said it responded to a distress call regarding the devastating flood that affected 2,000 persons in the community between May and June, 2024.

NEMA, on arrival at the scene, said it discovered that structures collapsed because “they were weak thereby rendering the occupants homeless,” adding that, “some of the homeless were seen under makeshift tents in unhealthy conditions” and others were accommodated by friends and loved ones living within the estate.

The agency also stated that its team also observed that many of the collapsed and weak structures had earlier been marked for demolition by the state government and some already demolished.

“Market, schools, hospitals, religious centres and police station in the area were submerged including their operational vehicles,” the statement added.
