BAKU, Azerbaijan

The Football Clubs Alliance for Climate Initiative was officially established during the UN Climate Change Conference COP29, currently taking place in Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku.

The alliance was officially presented Saturday at the COP29 venue in Baku. The initiative, co-organized by Azerbaijani side Qarabag FK and the European Club Association with support from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, aims to unite football clubs in addressing climate change.

In addition to Qarabag, other teams taking part in the alliance include England’s Liverpool and Tottenham, Spain’s Atletico Madrid and Real Betis, Italy’s Udinese, Portugal’s Porto, Brazil’s Flamengo and Sweden’s Malmo.

From Türkiye, Istanbul powerhouses Galatasaray and Fenerbahce are taking part.

Attending the alliance’s inaugural event as a special guest, former Türkiye and Galatasaray manager Fatih Terim stressed its significance.

Officials attending the event signed a declaration on establishing the Football Clubs Alliance for Climate Initiative.

Teams joining the alliance will show more sensitivity to the climate change issue and carry out relevant projects.

The COP29 conference began Nov. 11 and runs through Nov. 22.
