BERLIN (AP) – As part of an agreement reached between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Kenya’s President William Ruto, reached at the U.N. climate conference last month, Germany will provide Kenya with $118 million to convert the economy to 100 percent renewable energy and produce hydrogen.
Kenya aims to phase out the use of fossil fuels for electricity generation by 2030.
Germany’s Development Ministry said this week that 51 million euros will be earmarked for new energy infrastructure and hydrogen production, while some 30 million euros will be used for training programs.
Efforts to make Kenya’s agriculture more resilient to drought will receive a further 30 million euros and 1.5 million euros will be spent on anti-corruption programs.
