Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe has visited the 233 students sponsored by his administration to study at the Glocal University in Utta Pradesh, India.

Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe has visited the 233 students sponsored by his administration to study at the Glocal University in Utta Pradesh, India.

Mr Buni, represented by Deputy Governor Idi Gubana, warned the students against joining cult groups and other misconduct.

This is contained in a statement by Mr Gubana’s press secretary, Hussain Mai-Sule, in Damaturu on Saturday.

He said the students, drawn from the 17 local government areas, were studying medicine, pharmacy, engineering, and paramedic sciences, among others.

According to the statement, the visit was aimed at interacting with the students and the school’s management to assess the progress and challenges of the Yobe indigenes.

It added that the brief interaction at the university’s lecture hall was attended by about 126 students, teachers and other dignitaries.

“Be guided by ethical values, good conduct, moral behaviour and ensure compliance to acceptable norms of India,” the statement quoted Buni.

The governor also met with the university’s vice-chancellor, Syed Ahmed, and they exchanged ideas on the performances and proper mentoring of the students.

Mohammed Munkaila, the commissioner for higher education, science and technology, Garba Iliya (commissioner for humanitarian affairs and disaster management) and Buba Kalallawa (the chairman of the House of Assembly Committee on Higher Education), were part of the entourage.

In 2021, the Yobe government said it spent over N800 million on foreign scholarships for 316 students in various universities across the globe. Two hundred and thirty-three were sponsored to India, while 83 others were sent to the United Kingdom, Sudan and Uganda.

Mr Buni’s government said the sponsorship was part of efforts to raise education standards and address manpower shortages in civil service.
