The United States on Wednesday congratulated Nigeria on the occasion of its 65th independence anniversary, pledging more cooperation and partnership.

U.S. secretary of state Marco Rubio, in a statement, noted that for over six decades, Nigeria has stood as “a beacon of resilience and leadership”, celebrating its cultural and entrepreneurial heritage.

Mr Rubio noted that the U.S. and Nigeria shared democratic values, trade ties, and peacekeeping commitments.

“On this special occasion, we celebrate the rich cultural heritage, entrepreneurial spirit, and unwavering determination of the Nigerian people,” Mr Rubio said.

He added, “We look forward to continuing to deepen our collaboration in the years ahead as we work together to achieve our shared goals.”

He prayed that the year ahead would bring continued progress and prosperity to Nigeria and its people.

Nigeria and the U.S. have year-long trade ties, as the African nation exports petroleum, rubber, and cocoa, while importing products such as refined petroleum and vehicles from the U.S.

The countries’ bilateral relations are also characterised by investment in sectors such as oil and gas, agriculture, and telecommunications, among others.
