A former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Lagos State, Abdulazeez “Jandor” Adediran, has urged the federal government and state governments to ensure full implementation of local government (LG) autonomy.
Mr Adediran made the call in an interview with journalists in Lagos on Sunday.
The former governorship candidate, who recently defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), said full implementation of LG autonomy would promote development at the grassroots.
He added that granting councils full autonomy would make them less dependent on their respective states.
The politician commended President Bola Tinubu for his efforts towards autonomy for councils and strengthening of governance at the grassroots.
“The president promised that his administration would ensure LG autonomy. He went further to seek its judicial interpretation and got it. That action stands him out as a proactive leader who means well for the people.
“With the removal of the petroleum subsidy, more funds will be made available to the councils for development. This is a departure from the past.
“With full implementation of autonomy, the issue of stalled projects or abandoned projects in the councils will stop, and more people-oriented projects will be executed,” he said.
Mr Adediran commended what he called the peaceful conduct of the just-concluded council election in Lagos.
He urged incoming executives to prioritise the welfare of the people through the implementation of impactful programmes and projects.
The APC chieftain also urged incoming administrations to maintain peace and security in their respective areas.
