The Embassy of Japan has donated an atmospheric water generator, an “Elixir High-Tech Water Production Device”, and laboratory equipment to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Keffi in Nasarawa State.

Hideo Suzuki, Japan’s ambassador to Nigeria, donated the equipment to the management of FMC Keffi at a handover ceremony in Keffi on Friday.

Speaking on the development, Mr Suzuki said the gesture is aimed at improving healthcare services.

“This project is funded by the government of Japan with the aim of grassroots initiatives that enhance human security at the most essential level by providing access to safe water, among others,” he said.

He said the new atmospheric water generator developed by a Japanese company, Sustainable Holdings Company Limited, is expected to have a positive impact on people’s lives in Keffi.

“This equipment not only ensures the supply of clean and safe water for medical use but also significantly improves infection control and oral hygiene, which are critical components of any hospital system,” he said.

He added that the laboratory equipment donated with the atmospheric water generator would further improve the health centre’s diagnostic capabilities by helping medical staff provide timely and accurate care.

“We are helping to strengthen the healthcare infrastructure for the future of generations of Nigeria,” he stated.

Mr Suzuki explained further that the donation of the equipment also reflects the strong and growing relationship between Japan and Nigeria and demonstrates Japan’s commitment to promoting cooperation in health, science and technology.

He thanked Yahaya Baba-Adamu, the chief medical director of FMC Keffi, and other top management staff for their dedication throughout the project’s implementation.

Zulfa’u Danjuma, a representative of Sustainable Holdings Company Limited, explained that the Elixir High-Tech Water Production Device is a breakthrough technology that turns air into pure, life-sustaining water.

“Unlike conventional water sources, which rely on groundwater or municipal supplies vulnerable to contamination and scarcity, Elixir uses Advanced 13-stage purification integrating UV sterilisation, ultrafiltration (UF), reverse osmosis (RO), and alkaline mineralisation.

“This technology is not just innovative – it is essential. Elixir offers an inexhaustible, climate–resilient solution, revolutionising laboratory diagnostics and healthcare delivery. For FMC Keffi, the Elixir AWG is a catalyst for precision medicine,” she added.

Ms Danjuma further pointed out that laboratory diagnostics demand water of exceptional purity, but contaminants-even microscopic ones – can skew test results, misguide treatment, and endanger lives.

“It is cost-effective, has zero plastic waste, a low carbon footprint and low maintenance with just an annual change of filter. In healthcare, water purity isn’t a luxury – it’s the foundation of trust. Elixir transforms air into certainty for every diagnosis,” she said.

In an interview with journalists, Yahaya Baba-Adamu, CMD of FMC Keffi, expressed his elation that the facility was the first centre in Nigeria to benefit from the gesture from Japan.

“I am sure most of us know that water is produced from the ground, but this time around with this machine, it is from the atmosphere, and it can produce at least up to 1000 litres of water per day.

“This water is not just ordinary water. It is sterile and clean and can be used as drinking water and chemical analysis in laboratories. You can use it to wash patients’ wounds and abdomens because it is sterile and does not have contaminants or gems in it,” he said.
