The Jigawa government has allocated 50 hectares of land to fast-track the construction of a modern race course in Hadejia LGA.
The project coordinator, Abubakar Usman, said this in a statement by Muhammad Talaki, the spokesman for the Hadejia Emirate Council, on Tuesday.
Mr Usman said this during an inspection visit to the project site by the Emir of Hadejia, Adamu Abubakar-Maje. He said the project was designed with a horse racing track, a polo pitch, a football pitch and a basketball court.
The coordinator said work has already commenced on several components of the project, including the horse racing track, pavilion construction and provision of a water source.
Mr Abubakar-Maje commended the state government and the philanthropists for their support towards actualising the project.
He charged the constructors to expedite action as the emirate prepares to co-host the 2025/2026 International Horse Racing Derby, scheduled to be held between December 17, 2025 and February 7, 2026.
The derby is being organised by the Horse Racing Federation of Nigeria at the facility.
The emir pledged his council’s support for initiatives to promote sports, unity, and community development in the state.
The statement said the project would be carried out by the council, with the support of philanthropists and sports enthusiasts in the area.
