Kenya’s ex-Prime Minister Raila Odinga dies at 80

Raila Odinga, Kenya’s former Prime Minister and leader of the opposition Orange Democratic Movement, is dead.

Mr Odinga died of cardiac arrest in an Indian hospital.

He was 80.

Indian newspapers Mathrubhumi and The Hindu first broke the news of Mr Odinga’s death on Wednesday morning.

According to reports, Mr Odinga suffered cardiac arrest during a morning walk at the Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital and Research Centre.

Born on January 7, 1945, in Maseno, Mr Odinga was a legislator for Langata from 1992 to 2013. He served as the prime minister of Kenya from 2008 to 2013

A long-time opposition leader, Mr Odinga ran for president five times, including in the 2017 and 2022 elections.
