Opposition claims that at least 50 people have been killed by police in demonstrations against tax hikes

NAIROBI, Kenya

Kenya’s opposition canceled tax-hike protests planned for Wednesday to pay tribute to those who lost their lives or suffered injuries in past demonstrations.

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday in the capital Nairobi, opposition leader Raila Odinga urged supporters across the nation to participate in solidarity parades and peaceful vigils to remember the victims of police brutality and violence.

“Some have been shot in the back as they were fleeing or in a position of surrender. We are calling Kenyans to come out and light candles and lay flowers in remembrance of and respect for the victims,” Odinga said.

The opposition claims that at least 50 people have been killed by police in demonstrations against tax hikes.

The decision to forego the protests comes amid heightened scrutiny over the arrests of opposition leaders across the East African nation.

The protests across Kenya are in response to increased taxes and the high cost of living.
