A20-year-old lady Evie Toombes who sued her mother’s doctor for allowing her to be born has won the case in a London High Court.

Ms Toombes had accused her mother’s doctor, Philip Mitchel, of not advising her mother before pregnancy to take vital supplements thereby allowing her to be born with a rare medical condition called spinal bifida.

The judge, Rosalind Coe QC, gave a timing against the doctor and confirmed that the doctor never advised Evie’s mother to take folic acid prior to conception which could have prevented her being born with the spinal disability.

Delivering her judgement, Ms Rosalind awarded a huge sum as compensation to Ms Toombes for damages. Her lawyers added that the exact sum has not been calculated, but would be a big number as it would be enough cover the cost of her extensive care needs for life.

Despite her condition which makes her spend everyday of her life connected on tubes, Ms Toombes has got a successful career in showjumping, competing against both disabled and able-bodied riders.

She won the Inspiration Young Person Award at the Well Child Charity Event in 2018.
