Lagos assembly passes vote of confidence in speaker Meranda

Lawmakers in the Lagos State House of Assembly, during plenary on Monday, passed a vote of confidence in speaker Mojisola Meranda.

The member representing Oshodi-Isolo constituency 2, Oladipo Ajomale, moved the motion to affirm the assembly’s support of Ms Meranda, which was seconded by Gbolahan Ogunleye, the member representing Ikorodu constituency 1.

Majority leader Temitope Adewale thereafter moved a motion to adjourn plenary indefinitely, which was unanimously approved by the house.

This came after rumours of her possible resignation and the invasion of the assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja, by a joint team of the State Security Service and the Nigeria Police Force earlier in the day.

The heavily armed operatives sealed the speaker’s office, her deputy and that of the clerk of the house while also barricading the assembly complex.

The tension at the assembly began after 32 out of 40 lawmakers on January 13 impeached Mr Obasa as speaker while he was in the United States of America.

Mr Obasa, one of the most influential figures in Lagos politics, had insisted he remained the speaker, following the backing of Mr Tinubu, who ordered lawmakers to reinstate him.

Upon his return to Nigeria, the erstwhile speaker filed a motion challenging his impeachment at the Ikeja Division of the state High Court.
