At least 13 members of a local vigilante group were killed on Sunday when suspected Lakurawa terrorists launched a deadly attack on Morai community in Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The vigilantes reportedly confronted the attackers as they attempted to rustle cattle from the community, but were ambushed and fatally shot.

According to eyewitness Malam Ibrahim Augie, the vigilantes had mobilized swiftly after being alerted to the terrorists’ presence.

However, the Lakurawa group had already encircled the area and launched a surprise assault.

“The vigilantes hid to attack and recapture the rustled cattle, but they didn’t know the Lakurawa had already seen them. They were shot and killed,” he told Daily Trust.

The bodies of the slain vigilantes were recovered by locals following the attack, sparking fear and outrage in the area.

The attack adds to a growing wave of violence in northwestern Nigeria, where armed groups continue to carry out raids, kidnappings, and cattle rustling with impunity.
