On Thursday, President Donald Trump reshuffled with National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, who left his position after the messaging app Signal group chat security breach that marred his tenure.

On Thursday, Mr Trump announced this in a TruthSocial post.

“I am pleased to announce that I will be nominating Mike Waltz to be the next United States ambassador to the United Nations,” Mr Trump said. “From his time in uniform on the battlefield, in Congress and, as my National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our nation’s interests first. I know he will do the same in his new role.”

Meanwhile, Mr Trump announced that Secretary of State Marco Rubio will subsequently take over as the National Security Advisor on an interim basis alongside his job at the Department of State.

“In the interim, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will serve as National Security Advisor, while continuing his strong leadership at the State Department. Together, we will continue to fight tirelessly to Make America and the world safe again,” Mr Trump stated.

Mr Waltz’s removal was inevitable after he inadvertently added The Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg to a Signal group chat containing Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and others where they were discussing upcoming U.S. secret military strikes in Yemen targeting Houthi militias in March.

UN ambassador nominees require Senate approval, and Mr Waltz would need to face what could be uncomfortable questions at confirmation hearings.
