An unspecified number of indigenes of Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State were in the early hours of Monday attacked by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

DAILY POST learnt that the victims were on their way to the market when they were waylaid at Opanda, in Uzo-Uwani, leaving many of them in terrible conditions.

They were said to be coming from Obie Aku farm settlement when the assailants attacked them.

There are reports that three of the victims were confirmed dead on the spot, even as searches continue for more casualties.

DAILY POST also obtained graphic images of some of the victims with deadly matchet cuts.

A source hinted that the victims were rushed to the Bishop Shanahan Hospital, Nsukka, from where they were referred to the National Orthopedic Hospital, Enugu.

Among those seriously wounded are Melly Nwodo, Nnadi Arinze and Opia Apeh.

When DAILY POST contacted the spokesman of the Enugu Police Command, ASP Daniel Ndukwe, he confirmed the attack.

He, however, said three people were wounded and were responding to treatment.

He said in a statement made available to DAILY POST that “following an information received at Nimbo Police Division in the early hours today, 26/07/2021, alleging that yet-to-be identified hoodlums attacked some persons in a location at Opanda Village in Nimbo Community of Uzo-Uwani LGA, Police Operatives attached to the Division raced to the Scene and found 3 young men with degrees of machete cuts. They were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are responding to treatment.

“Meanwhile, the area is calm, whille the Commissioner of Police, CP, Mohammed Ndatsu Aliyu, has ordered the conduct of thorough investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident and bring the perpetrators to book.

“He also calls on residents of the area to remain calm and assist the Police with useful information, please.”

A few years back, Nimbo, in the same council area, suffered a similar attack, which left many dead.
