In a landmark decision, Nigeria’s Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has slapped Meta with a $220 million fine for breaching data protection and consumer rights laws through its platforms, Facebook and WhatsApp.
The investigation revealed multiple infractions, including unauthorized data sharing, denying consumers control over their personal information, discriminatory practices, and abuse of market dominance.
The FCCPC detailed five specific violations, underscoring Meta’s repeated disregard for Nigerian data laws. “With substantial evidence and ample opportunity given to Meta to present their case, the Commission has issued a Final Order and imposed a penalty,” stated Adamu Abdullahi, FCCPC’s chief executive.
Meta has yet to comment on the ruling.
According to the national statistics agency, Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation boasts one of the highest internet usage rates globally, with 154 million active subscribers as of 2022.
