NAIROBI, Kenya: Netflix is offering viewers in Kenya a no-charge option, with one-fourth of the content platform’s television shows and films to be made available on mobile devices.
Under the plan, viewers in Kenya can watch Netflix films, as well as television shows, including dramas Bridgerton and Money Heist, along with a teen series developed in Africa, called Blood & Water, in addition to some non-company licensed content.
Netflix is optimistic that the free plan will drive those using it to be directed to the payment feature that will offer content on a larger scale.
The California-headquartered company has trained its sights on increasing its customer base beyond crowded markets, including the U.S., where a slowdown in subscribers has occurred.
Officials are optimistic while noting that streaming television has become a major force in large markets.

“If you’ve never watched Netflix before – and many people in Kenya haven’t – this is a great way to experience our service,” the company’s product innovation director, Cathy Conk, noted in a blog posting.
“And if you like what you see, it’s easy to upgrade to one of our paid plans, so you can enjoy our full catalog on your TV or laptop, as well,” Conk added.
