LAGOS, Nigeria

The Nigerian Army killed at least 60 Boko Haram terrorists Friday after repelling an attack on a military base in Bita, Gwoza Local Government Area, northeastern Borno State.

The terrorists attacked troops from Sector One’s 26 Task Force Brigade station at Bita military base in the early hours on Friday.

“In a decisive and coordinated operation, gallant troops from Operation Hadin Kai launched a simultaneous land and air assault on terrorist positions in Bita, Borno State, in the early hours of today. The intense battle resulted in the neutralization of at least 60 terrorists,” according to a statement from Nigerian Army spokesman Onyinyechi Anele.

This was the second botched terrorist attack on Borno military bases in a week. Earlier, terrorists attacked three military bases in various parts of Borno in May.

Boko Haram is a militant group based in northeastern Nigeria and also active in Chad, Niger, northern Cameroon, and Mali. The terrorist group, which has been active in Nigeria since the early 2000s, has been responsible for mass terrorist attacks since 2009, claiming tens of thousands of lives.

On May 13, the terrorist group attacked a military base in the Marte Local Government Area of Borno State, in northeastern Nigeria, killing several soldiers.

More than 13,000 terrorists have been killed in the two years since Bola Tinubu took office as president, said National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu at the All Progressives Congress (APC) summit on May 22.
