Police have captured a Nigerian fugitive, Ikechukwu N., over his involvement in alleged romance scams and an international cybercrime network.
In a statement on social media on Tuesday, INTERPOL announced the arrest of Mr Ikechukwu, posting a photo of him with his face blurred.
“Argentina’s @PFAOficial and @seguridadpsa have captured Nigerian national Ikechukwu N., marking the country’s first arrest of a Red Notice fugitive who was also the subject of a Silver Notice, INTERPOL said.
Mr Ikechukwu, INTERPOL said, “is accused of orchestrating multiple romance scams involving thousands of women, and leading an international cybercrime network”.
He has been on Red Notice, a request to law enforcement worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest him pending extradition or surrender.
According to INTERPOL, Mr Ikechukwu’s arrest was part of ‘Operation Jackal’, an INTERPOL-coordinated initiative targeting West African organized criminal groups.
Mr Ikechukwu comes as another Nigerian in diaspora captured by security agencies for involvement in crimes.
Before his arrest, Chinnomso Ochie and Theophilis Anwana were arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
