The Federal Government has been charged to involve mathematicians in decision making to have viable and failure-free solutions to national problems.

This is as stakeholders were asked to come to the aid of Mathematics in the country.

The President of the Nigerian Society of Mathematics (NMS), Professor Bashir Alli, made the calls during the 39th Annual General Conference of the association held at the Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State.

He said Mathematics as a scarce skill needs to be given special attention and that society is ever ready to collaborate with the private sector.

Professor Alli said, no nation can develop without paying attention to the development of Mathematics which is the bedrock of Science and Technology.

The president also urged the government to improve the remuneration of teachers of mathematics at all levels.

The society also canvassed for government to make the study of mathematics attractive to the younger generation since no discipline can be studied without it through various incentives

He advocated the creation of mathematics laboratories in schools to make the study of the subject easy, appreciative and attractive to prospective lovers of the discipline in the country.

Participants at the conference appealed to policy-makers, donors, governments, the private sector and operators of higher institutions and research centres to increase research funding for mathematics in Nigeria.
