EU’s decision reflects trend towards ‘bureaucratic centralism’ in Brussels that ‘has to be stopped,’ says Mateusz Morawiecki

WARSAW

Poland’s prime minister on Wednesday criticized the EU as the bloc launched a legal action against the country for allegedly undermining EU law.

In a statement broadcast on the country’s national television, Mateusz Morawiecki said the EU’s decision reflected a trend towards “bureaucratic centralism” in Brussels that “has to be stopped.”

On Wednesday, the European Commission decided to launch an infringement procedure against Poland because of “serious concerns with respect to the Polish Constitutional Tribunal and its recent case law.”

The commission said it has “serious doubts on the independence and impartiality of the Constitutional Tribunal and considers that it no longer meets the requirements of a tribunal previously established by law.”

The commission had also initiated infringement proceedings against Poland in 2017, 2019 and 2020.
