LUSAKA, Zambia

A Namibian politician named after German dictator Adolf Hitler was declared the winner by a landslide in a local government election, according to official results published late Thursday.

Adolf Hitler Uunona, now preferring to be addressed as Adolf Uunona, retained his seat in his small northern constituency of Ompundja in the Oshana region by receiving 1,275 votes, while his sole challenger, Isak Akawa, received 148 votes.

Uunona, who has no connection to the infamous German Fuhrer, ran on the ruling South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO) party ticket, while Akawa ran on the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC).

Uunona has held the council seat in the region of the former German colony since 2004 and, earlier this week, announced that he would prefer to be officially addressed as Adolf Uunona going forward.

He was quoted by local media as saying he no longer wanted to be known by his birth name as his character and ambition were the opposite of the former Nazi Germany chancellor, whom he says he hardly ever knew.
