The M23 rebels have seized the town of Masisi in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo over the weekend.
Rebels captured the town following clashes starting Friday with the Congolese armed forces and Wazalendo alliance of armed groups loyal to the government, UN Radio Okapi reported on Sunday.
To escape the violence, many residents sought refuge near Masisi General Hospital, while others fled to Nyabiondo, Bukombo, and similar locations perceived as safer.
The attack by rebels was confirmed by the provincial deputy Alexis Bahunga, elected from the Masisi territory, who called on the Kinshasa government to do everything in its power to liberate all areas currently occupied by members of the M23/RDF (Rwandan Forces) coalition.
A video posted on X by M23 spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka showed heavily-armed M23 militiamen holding a meeting in front of some local residents, where they claim to have come to “liberate” the population.
Several locations, including Karele, Lushebe and Masisi-Centre, are now reportedly under the M23 control.
The Congolese military authorities are yet to comment on the occupation of these localities.
Since 2021, the M23, allegedly backed by Rwanda, has resumed its attacks on DR Congo’s armed forces, seizing several strategic locations in the east.
Last December, a peace process between DR Congo and Rwanda was to be concluded under Angolan mediation, but failed, further aggravating tensions and persistent instability within the region.
