The Russian Northern Fleet started military training on Friday aimed at working out actions to protect the country’s sovereignty in the waters of the Northern Sea Route (NSR).
“During the exercises, under the leadership of Fleet Commander Admiral Alexandr Moiseev, various options for managing fleet forces while performing tasks to protect the sovereignty of the Russian Federation in the waters of the NSR will be tested,” the fleet’s press service said in a statement.
The training involves more than 8,000 military personnel, 20 warships, submarines and support vessels, 5 aircraft, and up to 50 units of combat and special equipment.
The statement said that the training also aimed at assessing the coordination of the units and forces of the fleet during the practical implementation of tasks.
The personnel will be trained on isolating areas of operations, blocking and destroying sabotage and reconnaissance groups.
