On Thursday, Energoatom said the troops were heading toward Ukraine’s border with Belarus.

Ukraine’s state nuclear company Energoatom has said that Russian soldiers who had taken control of the Chernobyl nuclear power station have left the decommissioned plant.

On Thursday, Energoatom said the troops were heading toward Ukraine’s border with Belarus.

“The information is confirmed that the occupiers, who seized the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and other facilities in the exclusion zone, have set off in two columns towards the Ukrainian border with the Republic of Belarus,” Energoatom said on Telegram.

The nuclear operator also said the Russians signed a document confirming the handover of the Chernobyl plant and stating that the plant’s administration doesn’t have any complaints about the Russian troops who were “guarding” the facility.

The move comes after Russia agreed to curtail military action near Ukraine’s capital Kyiv and the northern city of Chernihiv on Tuesday amid peace talks striving at ending the war.

Chernobyl was captured by Russian forces on February 24, at the start of the invasion, when Russian soldiers invaded Ukraine from Belarus and entered the exclusion zone around Chernobyl.
