Vice President Kashim Shettima arrived in Lagos on Sunday to brief President Bola Tinubu on the security situation in Maiduguri, Borno State, and to pay the traditional Sallah homage.

Mr Shettima’s visit follows his trip to Maiduguri at the instance of the president, where he conducted an on-the-spot assessment after multiple bomb explosions in the city.

The vice president is expected to update the president on his findings, including engagements with affected families, community leaders, and relevant authorities during the condolence visit.

Maiduguri was recently rocked by multiple bomb blasts by suspected Boko Haram terrorists, resulting in several casualties and injuries.

Thereafter, the vice president is expected to lead serving governors on a visit to the president on Sunday afternoon.

The meeting is expected to felicitate with the president on Eid-el-Fitr and to discuss strengthening inter-governmental collaboration to address emerging security threats and improve rapid response mechanisms across the country.

The strategic meeting underscores the administration’s commitment to proactive engagement and continuous monitoring of security developments in the country.

Mr Shettima, who was in Maiduguri, assured Nigerians that the federal government will decisively confront perpetrators of the multiple bomb explosions in Maiduguri.

The vice president, who visited victims receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital on Wednesday, disclosed that beyond Mr  Tinubu’s directive to security chiefs, the federal government is investing more in equipment and other logistics to boost the fight against terrorism across the country.

Mr Shettima condemned the attacks, describing the perpetrators as barbaric and stressing that no cause justifies the killing of innocent people.

The Borno Police Command confirmed that 23 people were killed while 108 others sustained varying degrees of injuries in the coordinated attacks.
