KHARTOUM, Sudan/ISTANBUL

The Sudanese Foreign Ministry accused the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Saturday of committing a “massacre” against civilians in Al-Nahud in West Kordofan state, resulting in the deaths of 300 victims.

The RSF had not issued a comment on the accusation but the group announced that it had taken control of El-Khuwei in West Kordofan, one day after seizing Al-Nahud in southern Sudan.

“The RSF militia continues to commit crimes against humanity, massacres, and ethnic cleansing in various parts of the country,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“Over the past two days, this militia has committed a new heinous massacre against civilians in the city of Al-Nahud, where killings were carried out on an ethnic basis. The number of victims has so far reached approximately 300 dead.”

It renewed its demand on the UN Security Council and international actors to abandon “a lenient approach bordering on indifference toward the RSF militia.”

The RSF announced Friday that it had taken full control of Al-Nahud and seized the headquarters of the Army’s 18th Infantry Brigade in the city, following clashes.

Al-Nahud had previously been under army control and was declared the temporary administrative capital of West Kordofan in July 2024, after the RSF captured its original capital of El-Fula.

Since April 15, 2023, the RSF has been battling the army for control of Sudan, resulting in thousands of deaths and one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

More than 20,000 victims have been killed, and 15 million displaced, according to the UN and local authorities.

US researchers, however, estimate the death toll at around 130,000.
