TAIPEI, Taiwan: Lithuania has opened a representative office in Taiwan, according to Remus Chen, head of the Taiwan Foreign Ministry Department of European Affairs.
After Lithuania allowed Taiwan to open a de facto embassy in its capital Vilnius, China, which claims the island as its own territory, has downgraded its diplomatic ties and pressured multinationals to sever links with Lithuania.
Chen told reporters that the new Lithuanian representative, Paulius Lukauskas, arrived in Taipei earlier this month and has officially applied for accreditation.
In July, China, which has repeatedly denounced Lithuania’s engagement with Taiwan, imposed sanctions on Lithuanian Deputy Transport and Communications Minister Agne Vaiciukeviciute for
visiting Taiwan.
