Former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal has lauded the U.S. military and its Nigerian counterpart for airstrikes against terrorists in Sokoto State.
Mr Tambuwal, the senator representing Sokoto South, in a statement on Friday, lauded the Nigerian-U.S. collaboration.
“I commend the courage and professionalism of our military and security forces, who continue to work tirelessly, often in collaboration with international partners, to confront terrorism and banditry under extremely challenging conditions,” said Mr Tambuwal.
He added, “Their sacrifice and commitment to restoring peace and stability deserve our full support and cooperation.”
Mr Tambuwal urged communities to remain calm and law-abiding as relevant authorities clarify the circumstances surrounding the operation.
“It is important to reassure the public that counterterrorism operations are targeted at criminal and terrorist elements who threaten our collective safety, and not at innocent civilians who are themselves victims of insecurity.
The protection of civilian lives remains paramount and remains central to all legitimate security operations,” Mr Tambuwal said.
He urged community leaders, traditional institutions, and residents to continue working closely with security agencies by sharing credible information and resisting misinformation that could heighten fear or tension.
After designating Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern over alleged Christian genocide and threatening to invade the country to eliminate terrorists killing Christians, President Donald Trump, in a post on Truth Social, announced that the U.S. military carried out a series of air strikes against terrorist targets in the northern part of Nigeria, marking America’s first kinetic action in the West African country.
“Tonight, at my direction as commander-in-chief, the United States launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS Terrorist Scum in North-West Nigeria, who have been targeting and viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians, at levels not seen for many years, and even centuries!” Mr Trump said.
He added, “The Department of War executed numerous perfect strikes, as only the United States is capable of doing. Under my leadership, our country will not allow radical Islamic terrorism to prosper.”
This strike comes barely a month after Mr Trump designated Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern, threatening military invasion to eliminate terrorists killing Christians in Nigeria.
