The Nigeria Consumer Protection Network has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in the power sector.

The group’s president, Kunle Olubiyo, made the appeal in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday while reacting to the incessant collapse of the national grid.

As a matter of urgency, Mr Olubiyo appealed to the president to review the power sector privatisation for the evidently pronounced failure.

”You recalled that the power sector was privatised in 2013 with embedded design for mid-term review in 2018 and review of the 10 years Moratorium in 2013,” he said.

He said the widespread outage in Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Benue, Katsina, Taraba, Gombe, and parts of Borno and Nasarawa was a global embarrassment.

”This deserves a firm and proactive presidential directive or Executive order on the power sector,” he said.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria attributed the power outage in the north to the tipping of its 330 KV Ugwaji–Apir double circuit transmission lines 1 and 2.
