Human rights organisation, Amnesty International, has lamented Boko Haram’s mass slaughter of at least 145 people in Dumba, near Baga in Borno, last week, charging President Bola Tinubu to tackle insecurity as killings and abductions have become “commonplace” in Nigeria.
“A mass burial was held today for the 147 victims of Boko Haram’s horrific Sunday 12 January slaughter of farmers and fishermen at Dumba near Baga Borno state,” said the rights organisation. “Boko Haram must be held to account for its years of atrocities, including war crimes.”
It condemned prolonged killings and abductions perpetuated by Boko Haram.
“The fact that such atrocities remain commonplace shows that President Bola Tinubu’s government must do more to protect civilians and ensure that families of victims receive reparation and justice,” stated the organisation.
Governor Babagana Zulum and the United Nations have condemned the attack while sympathising with the families of the victims. However, Mr Tinubu’s regime has not officially reacted to the incident.
Boko Haram slaughter of 147 people in Dumba came less than a month after Mr Tinubu boasted of improved security under his watch.
In his first media chat in the twilight of December 2024, Mr Tinubu said, “Today, I have confidence in my security architecture. It is very unfortunate that 2 decades of wanton killing.
“When I jumped into the campaigns, I had to stop the campaign and go for condolence visits in Maiduguri, Katsina, Kaduna. Today, you can still travel the roads. Before now, it was impossible.”
