Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi, and former Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo are also interested in contesting the presidential election
The Concerned Members Forum of the ruling All Progressives Congress has written a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, appealing to him not to allow party chieftains’ 2023 presidential ambition to destroy APC.
“Judging by the activities of the various actors, we appeal to President Buhari not to allow the selfish interest of the 2023 presidential ambition of some ranking members to destroy the party,” the group appealed.
This came as the APC national leader Bola Tinubu commenced consultations nationwide, having informed Mr Buhari of his interest in becoming the number one citizen.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi, and former Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo are also interested in contesting the presidential election.
Okpokwu Ogenyi, the convener of the forum, commended Mr Buhari’s resilience in safeguarding the soul of the APC, saying, “he has been the only reason the party is formidable, dependable, and reliable.”
According to Mr Ogenyi, the party’s crisis came from a poor reward system for its loyal members over the years.
“While most loyal members of the party were complaining of government patronage, some persons were occupying more than one position in government,” he noted.
Mr Ogenyi urged Mr Buhari to recommend a committed and disciplined party member to lead APC beyond 2023.
“Such a person must be a man of humility and resilience with acute knowledge of party administration and would respect both former and serving governors, senators, ministers, and party faithful,” he said.
This, he said, would go a long way in reducing the internal crisis in the party, controlling the expenditure of some aspirants, and solving the problem of reconciliation after its national convention.
