President Bola Tinubu has written to the leadership of the Nigerian Senate seeking the confirmation of Taiwo Oyedele as a minister in his cabinet.
In a letter addressed to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, Tinubu said Oyedele’s nomination for ministerial appointment was made in accordance with the provisions of the constitution
Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the president’s letter conveying the nomination during plenary on Tuesday, March 10.
“In compliance with the provisions of section 147(2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, I am pleased to forward to the Senate for confirmation the nomination of Mr Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the letter read in part.
The president also stated that he hopes his request will be given expeditious review by the Senate.
“While I hope that this request will receive expeditious consideration of the Senate, please accept Distinguished Senate President the assurances of my highest regards,” Tinubu said in the letter.
Akpabio subsequently referred the nomination to the committee of the whole for consideration.
“Well, in line with our practice and as a result of the urgency, this is referred to the Committee of the Whole for future consideration,” the Senate President noted.
Recall that the president has on March 3, nominated Oyedele as the minister of state for finance, replacing Doris Uzoka-Anite, who will now move to the Ministry of Budget and National Planning, as the Minister of State.
Oyedele, 50, is an economist, accountant and public policy expert who until his nomination as minister served as the chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, which overhauled Nigeria’s tax system.
