Tunisia has been in throes of deep political crisis since last year

TUNIS, Tunisia

Hundreds of Tunisians demonstrated in the capital Tunis on Saturday against policies of President Kais Saied amid a deep political crisis in the North African country.

Demonstrators chanted slogans against the economic policies of the Tunisian president during a protest organized by the Free Constitutional Party, according to an Anadolu Agency reporter on the ground.

“It’s better for a government that is not able to take a decision to resign,” party leader Abir Moussi told protesters.

She termed a planned constitutional referendum by the Tunisian leader on July 25 as “illegal and illegitimate.”

Tunisia has been in the throes of a deep political crisis that has aggravated the country’s economic conditions since Saied ousted the government, suspended parliament and assumed executive authority last year.

While Saied insists his measures were meant to “save” the country, critics have accused him of orchestrating a coup.
