WASHINGTON D.C.: The U.S. government issued an advisory on Monday urging U.S. citizens to avoid travel to Great Britain because of their rising Covid infection rates.

A “Level 4” warning — the most serious issued by U.S. agencies — was made public at the same time that the British government ended most pandemic restrictions.

However, England is now experiencing the highest level of new infections since January, due to the spread of the Covid Delta variant.

Besides avoiding Britain, the U.S. is also asking citizens to refrain from traveling to Brazil, South Africa and the Netherlands, which are also on the Level 4 list.

“If you must travel to the United Kingdom, make sure you are fully vaccinated before travel,” the government said in its advisory. “Because of the current situation in the United Kingdom, even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants.”

In the past week, infections in Britain increased by more than 313,000, or 44 percent.

Fatalities also rose by 39 percent in the U.K., with 283 deaths in one week.

U.S. citizens returning to the United States from Britain must show a negative COVID-19 test or recent recovery from the disease before boarding a U.S.-bound flight.
