Ukraine said on Friday that at least one person was killed and nine others injured in a morning Russian missile attack on the capital Kyiv.
“Nine were injured in an enemy attack on the capital. Four of them were hospitalized. Also, the body of one killed was found,” Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said in a statement on Telegram.
Serhiy Popko, the head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, separately said on Telegram that the attack took place at around 7 a.m. local time (0500GMT), adding that Russia “probably used ballistic missiles.”
He said falling debris from the missiles was recorded in five districts, and at least two office buildings in the Holosiivskyi district sustained damage, with the roof of one having caught fire.
Popko said falling debris also resulted in a fire at one non-residential building each in the Solomianskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts.
He said as many as 630 residential buildings, 16 medical institutions, 17 schools, and 13 kindergartens in Kyiv were left without heating.
Ukraine’s Air Force later claimed that its air defenses shot down five Iskander-M missiles launched towards the capital.
The Russian Defense Ministry in a statement said it launched a group strike on Kyiv in response to a Ukrainian missile strike in the Rostov region on the night between Wednesday and Thursday.
It claimed that the attack successfully targeted a command post of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), the Luch Design Bureau, and the position of a Patriot missile system.
